Senegal Doubles Penalties for Same-Sex Relations: What This Means for Queer People

National Assembly of Senegal overwhelmingly passed a bill late Wednesday that doubles the maximum prison sentence for same-sex sexual acts to 10 years and criminalizes efforts to promote homosexuality.

The law, approved by 135 votes to zero with three abstentions, fulfills a campaign promise of the government that came to power in 2024 under Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko. It now awaits the president’s signature to become law.
